National Identity Formation in Czech Christmas Fairytale Films
Over an early Christmas dinner with friends in a cozy flat in West London, we discussed traditions we would be participating in upon our returns to home. Whether that would include Christmas barbecues for those heading to the southern hemisphere, games of luck in the pursuit of marzipan for those heading further north, or simply dishes that would have to grace everyone’s dinner tables (for me, scalloped potatoes and bond films are a must for the festive season). One tradition however, struck me as particularly unique. A Czech friend explained the importance of one film in the crafting of a christmas spirit Tři oříšky pro Popelku, in English Three Wishes for Cinderella.
The Moment is Over Before It Gets Started
There's something missing from The Moment. The premise, developed from Charli xcx's very own noggin, is postured as a music industry satire. Shallow corporate partnerships and detrimental miscommunications ultimately orchestrate the downfall of Brat Summer as the fictional Charli folds under pressure from her label, her peers, and the overbearing film director Johannes Godwin (Alexander Skarsgård) despite having already established a distinct tone for her breakout album.
Send Help: Is Woke Back? Or Are We Doomed to Repeat the Cycle?
Sam Raimi's return to an original screenplay sits somewhere between Ready or Not (2019) and Blink Twice (2024) on the elevated horror lunch table. Troupes of the elevated subgenre -- most notably the social commentary and the slasher smile -- are sewn together with Raimi's recognisable comic book style cinematography to produce something entertaining, enjoyable, but a little overdone.
Gen V Season 2 Redeems The Boys Season 4
The Boys season 4 almost put me off watching Gen V season 2 entirely. Everyone's aware that The Boys toes the line with dark humour. There's something incredibly watchable about the weird, kinky superhero shags that are sprayed across the series.
Summer of Horror: Bring Her Back, Weapons, & Together
The horror of this summer has been of high quality. Mostly. Weapons has triumphed with critics and audiences, and Bring Her Back has introduced a school of fantastic young actors to a mainstream audience. There has, however, been disappointments.
Psychosexual Thrillers for the Horny and Disturbed
There’s been surge in strange and sexy cinema lately, with the release of Babygirl and the teasing of the new Wuthering Heights receiving a mixed reception from audiences. A common critique is: “why is everything about sex these days?”
Anora is All About Love
In a neon-lit lap dance club, we meet Anora. She's topless and gyrating in slow-motion on top of a horny man. We hear Gary Barlow's vocals in "The Greatest Day" paired alongside this image.
